Pay that matches the work
Repair shops don't pay like other businesses. Some mechanics are hourly, some earn a share of the labour on their jobs, and some get both. MapleFix pays each person their way:
- By the hour: hours from the job clock, times their rate.
- Percentage of labour: their share of the labour billed on their jobs, before tax.
- Both, plus a salary per pay and any extra pay you add.
Pay runs can be weekly, every two weeks, twice a month or monthly.
Deductions, estimated the CRA way
MapleFix estimates each person's deductions following CRA's payroll formulas (guide T4127) for an Ontario employee: CPP and the employer's matching CPP, CPP2, EI and the employer's share, federal tax, and Ontario tax with the surtax, the Ontario tax reduction and the Ontario Health Premium. You can change any rate and override any amount. We call them estimates, and we suggest checking your first runs against CRA's Payroll Deductions Online Calculator (PDOC).
Vacation pay
Vacation pay starts at 4%. Pay it out on each pay, or let it build up and pay it when the person takes time off.
Pay runs that post themselves
A pay run starts as a draft you can check. When you post it, MapleFix records the wages, the employer's CPP and EI and the deductions owed to CRA in your books, and prints a pay stub for each person with year-to-date figures.
Remittances and T4s
MapleFix keeps track of what you owe CRA each month and when it's due, the 15th of the following month for most small employers, and records the payment when you make it. At the end of the year it gives you the T4 slip and T4 Summary figures (boxes 14, 16, 16A, 18, 22, 24 and 26) in your year-end package, ready for you or your accountant to file.
Private by default
Payroll is for the owner only, and it's run on the computer. MapleFix doesn't store social insurance numbers, and mechanics never see anyone's pay but the totals you hand them.
