Your GST/HST return, worked out from your own books

Every invoice, bill and receipt in MapleFix already carries its HST, so the return fills itself in, line by line. Copy the numbers into CRA and mark it filed.

The GST/HST return for the last quarter, worked out from the books: the amount owed to CRA and the day it is due, and HST charged on sales against HST paid on purchases, month by month.

No more adding up HST by hand

Most shop owners file their GST/HST return by digging through invoices and receipts and hoping the totals are right. MapleFix keeps the HST on every sale and every purchase as you go, so at the end of the period the return is already done. The screen shows each line exactly as CRA's return lays it out, ready to copy into CRA My Business Account or GST/HST NETFILE.

Every line, from 101 to 115

MapleFix works out your sales (line 101), the HST you collected (103), your input tax credits (106), the net tax (109) and every line in between and after, through to the refund or payment on lines 114 and 115. Adjustments are handled for you: HST on a bad debt you wrote off goes on line 107, and HST on one that's later paid goes on line 104. Licence fees and other amounts that are out of scope stay out of line 101. You can add other credits, adjustments or rebates yourself.

Input tax credits that add up

Your ITCs come from the HST on your expenses, paid bills and scanned receipts, less any HST a supplier credited back. Meals and entertainment are claimed at 50%. For each purchase you choose "HST 13% included", "GST 5% only" (a supplier outside Ontario) or "No HST", and accounts such as insurance, wages, bank fees and interest start at No HST. On purchases of $100 or more, MapleFix asks for the supplier's GST/HST number, which CRA expects you to keep.

Monthly, quarterly or annual

Pick your reporting period and MapleFix sets the periods from your fiscal year end. Annual filers get an instalment plan when net tax reaches $3,000. Instalments, payments to CRA and refunds are posted to your books, and the small-supplier check compares your taxable sales over the last four quarters with the $30,000 limit.

A filed return stays filed

When you mark a return as filed, MapleFix keeps a copy of it and locks the period: invoices, credit notes, expenses, bills, journal entries and receipts dated inside it can't be added or changed. If you truly need to, the owner can reopen the period, and that is recorded. Payments from customers are never locked, because money can arrive any day.
